oooh congrats on your newly wedded years completion! (and wow, has it really been that long already?)
naps are bad for you? since all I do is nap I guess I should have been dead about 5 years ago then! (I have yet to reach that 8 hour a night sleep goal).

Crazy to think it has been that long, but indeed it has been!

Ya, I couldn't find the actual journal article but this article sums up their findings.

Oh wow! That's something I'm not aware of. I wonder what increases the risk of dying, though. Can't imagine it.

that study is only about british people, and is pretty weak...they really didnt get indepth information on the study participants nor did they do regular follow-ups on them....(perhaps there were other reasons why those deaths happened).

a few statements in that article stand out for me:
Persons who took naps were more likely to be smokers, not working, and less active and to have a lower educational level, higher BMI, and poor self-reported general health. The above associations were all stronger for those who napped for longer time periods.
and
In the United Kingdom, daytime napping is not part of the cultural norm, and in the absence of obvious disruptions in nighttime sleep patterns, it remains plausible that napping might be an early sign of system disregulation and a marker of future health problems.
I am not convinced since they state that some other studies have said its good while others have said its bad (the cultural norm of the siesta, for example).

I think that the people they studied had other problems since they say they only asked them to fill out a questionnaire not get a full medical workup before they checked them out (yes they say they had had one in the past, but unless it was a complete physical, I think that some things may have been left out). Not to mention the stand out statement : POOR GENERAL HEALTH, so those individuals probably had other issues not related to napping at all. They would need to study the effects on those in GOOD health not people who already have pre-existing conditions which may lead to a shorter life span.

so first study on brits....they shouldnt nap if they are older than 40. Good thing I am not brit!

not to mention, my mom napped plenty and lived well past age 80! Dad never napped--died at 56---you figure it out. (and I am past 40 as well and still kicking! been napping my whole life!)

bleh....sorry went off on that.

so I hope you told your dads a happy fathers day.

Part of the reason I wanted the original article is for the conclusion. If they were any kind of good researchers they would have made note of that in their conclusion and should have said that that skewed their results. If they did it with people who had the same activity level, were non-smokers, etc. then it could be more believable. Either way it is an interesting thought.

So, it's just poor experiment set-up then? They concluded without a concrete basis? Not good... No wonder it was so intriguing.

It would be hard to find the perfect people who all have the same basic living habits in that large number. They worked with what they had. That said I think the article itself is what may be why it appears the science was bad. Without being able to read the results and conclusion parts of the actual journal article all we can do is assume. It is quite possible that it was noted in the conclusion that these habits, smoking, obesity, etc., were more than likely the cause of a premature death than the nap. At least I would hope so...

Then if why post such an article if they don't really have a conclusive evidence? Some of the readers of that article might miss that part of the article and leave with the 'not-so-right' idea that nap is bad for your health. I don't like that kind of an article :3.

Welcome to the media. Another example of our awesome media is as followed. I teach at a town that has the "new" high school, where we obviously teach now, and the "old" high school. A week or two before school was going to end the "old" high school caught on fire. Basically a huge fire. The media decided to simply tell people that the high school was on fire. The amount of calls the school got was ridiculous... People saying they heard the school was on fire and such. Took forever for them to finally clarify that it was the OLD high school. Even on articles they said the high school was on fire. Then at the end it would say the old high school. >.> Dumb.

On a side note, some people are dumb now that I think about it. They called IN to the high school to see if it was on fire... First clue that it isn't should be that someone answered. But nope, they still asked if the building was on fire. Why yes, yes it is! That is why we are sitting here answering your calls instead of evacuating!

yes the IQ of most people now-a-days is appalling (try working customer service if you dont believe me.....example, person buys a shirt, decided they didnt like it so they return it and buy another shirt....they get their cc bill and call up the cc asking why they were charged when they returned the item.....we pick it up from there 'but I returned the shirt' 'yes, but you bought another one' 'yes but I returned the shirt so I shouldnt be charged for a shirt', 'yes, but you then bought another one which you have to pay for' 'but I returned the shirt'.....yeah, then we had the people who insisted that bankruptcy was a good thing 'that was last month', yeah, well, it takes up to 7 years to clear off your record---)
yes, you hear all sorts of stupid human tricks when you work in customer service (of any kind--hubby did a stint in IT support.....'I cant get this computer to work' 'have you turned it on' yes, I did but its still not working' 'are there any lights on it' yes, I put my flash light on top of it' /facepalm...or the best one....'----now put the cd in the player' 'cd player?' 'yes, the cd/dvd player' 'oh...I thought that was a cup holder' oy)

and I have noticed that many of my college friends decided not to have kids, more and more college grads have made this choice (for whatever reason)----

makes you wonder

in other news....had some real whoooopers of storms move thru yesterday (missed us)...and more on the way for most of the rest of the week....not to mention the HOT temps

Reminds me - We were under a tornado warning, I was watching the rotating wall cloud about to pass over the house. I was watching around the corner from our safe place, when the phone rings. "Hello." "Why aren't you under cover?" "I had to answer your call." "Why?" "If I hadn't, you would have been on your way here to make sure everything was ok." "Oh. Well get under cover." "Too late. The rotation has passed us by." The rotation dropped a tornado less than 1/4 mile to the north and it tracked for almost 30 miles. That was close.

I too see stupid people as well... There are definitely some parents that I wish had not reproduce. Oh well. Too late now.

We actually didn't get any storms. They kept calling for them but we didn't get any. Which is a good thing.

Wow, that is crazy Perk. Glad it missed you guys. Tornadoes are not something you want to hit your house or anything... I definitely have a much bigger respect for tornadoes after seeing the damage one can do first hand in my hometown...

holiday? we have one in about 2 weeks...flu season? you in the southern hemisphere? (flu season here is in winter).

yes makes you wonder, especially since the ones who seem to be having kids are not the ones with the college (or higher) education---wonder what they future will be like. (and yes, the cd player one really did happen--more than once! hubby had it and when I worked for WIC a looooooooong time ago the IT folks there had it too --or first since that was the 90's and hubby had it....well, after that).

flu is not a fun thing, hope she drinks plenty of fluids and gets more rest!

and yeah, more '50% chance of thunderstorms, some could be severe' for the whole rest of the week basically....think we had a few rain drops but otherwise it looks ominous but then...nothing (which could be a good thing after reading Perkunas' adventure!!)

I was coming to the same conclusion cosy. Sounds like axe is in the Southern hemisphere.

Lots of parents seem to only have a high school diploma and then they come in and try to tell me how I'm doing my job wrong. (That happens very, very rarely, and can really on think of two times where a parent did that, every other parent I haven't had any issues with). My sister and brother-in-law both only have high school diplomas and it unfortunately has made their lives much more difficult. Higher education is important!

We got a storm that rolled through this afternoon. Lots and lots of rain, but it wasn't too bad of a storm, thankfully.

got some storms again, got plenty of rain (no need to water my herbs tomorrow).

unfortunately you need a college degree now to get a lot of jobs, and the peeps with the mini-wage jobs now want to be paid like they have one (plus a masters and PhD!), there is a reason they are mini-wage, you are not supposed to live off them (though I can understand in this 'non'-recession why lots of peeps are still doing mw jobs----), they are starter jobs, jobs kids do during the summer,---

man, our society is so messed up.

had brats for dinner. (had to get a more cheery tone going here).

Give those two some prizes! I actually am in the southern hemisphere.

Our country can certainly relate to that job problem. We have a high density population in our major cities thus, job vacancies are scarce. Unemployment rate is high and so is the percentage of people w/o a diploma. For that reason, a lot of us resort to going and working abroad(more vacancies and HUGE salaries, compared here). You can probably guess my country now (or not).

Lol. Kids. They are the embodiment of extremities. So cute and adorable yet so noisy and annoying. Lol (I assume they're still not teenagers? :P)

Woo, love it when we are right. High five cosy!

I teach high schoolers, so they are far past cute and adorable and full out noisy and annoying. Just rarely in my class. I have rules.

Kills me that the MickeyD's workers want $15 an hour. Before taxes that is $32,000 a year! There are people with college degrees who don't make $32,000 a year! Like cosy said, it's not meant to be a career, it is meant as a tide me over thing, or a summer job for students.

yes, most entry level office workers (college degree required) only get $10-$11/hour, why should folks who havent even graduated hs get paid more than these people for doing a job which requires NO schooling, and very little training (I have indeed worked there and can tell you the training)???? I know of a few other jobs that have a specific college degree required who only make $14/hour! ....must....leave...this...topic....alone.

thud (sound of me falling off of my soap box).

ok....better ...

OOOO we guessed right! high five back pwnd!
kids are cute and adorable? WHEN???? I've been thru the growing up of my nieces/nephews (oldest nephew has a PhD and just got a HUGE grant from the college he works for...aged 32, youngest niece is 2?3?) and have never seen this cute or adorable stage. (I am old school---kids should be neither seen nor heard).

Because they deserve it! They have worked hard to underachieve and should be rewarded for it. Everyone gets a trophy in today's society. It doesn't matter if you lose every time and do horrible, you still get a trophy because you tried. We need to get away from that... Kids need to learn to lose, maybe that will make them less entitled. Realizing they have to earn what they want. Though that probably won't happen. Can't hurt their poor little feelings...

My nephews are cute and adorable. Of course they are 7, 5, 2, and 1. So that is a bit different.
